Cairns Youth Mentoring Scheme

Our Goals

To provide an ongoing mentoring program for young people between the ages of 12-21, who perceive they have a need related to personal issues, education, work or achievement. To involve the community in supporting our young people (It takes a village to raise a child -African Proverb). To share our resources with other organisations and schools across Australia.

Our objectives and outcomes

Our objective is to provide mentoring services and activities to improve the level of engagement of young people with family, education, training, the workplace and the community. Our intended program outcomes are increased levels of:
  • Self esteem and resilience
  • Opportunities for participation in work, education, training and community life
  • Connection with family and peers
  • Engagement with the community
  • Skills in areas such as leadership and communication

The Cairns Youth Mentoring Scheme is looking for adult male and female volunteer mentors to kick start the programme for 2013.

We are asking for people who have a couple of hours free every week or two, to give to someone who may need the support and friendship of a trusted adult mentor. Mentoring is a powerful tool and can literally change people's lives.

Mentors come from all walks of life and mentoring is an enriching experience for both parties.

All mentors go through a comprehensive training and checking process, to ensure the safety of those young people we look after. However we are always looking for people to get involved in this very positive and rich experience to help our young people.

Mentor interviews will be carried out at the end of March, soon followed by training. Specified dates to be announced soon.

For more information for prospective Mentors and Mentees (child from 12 - 21yrs) who wish to be involved in the programme, register interest by emailing us.
